Anne & Rick at the Iyengar Yoga Center, New Delhi

First day in India

After 24 hours of travel, we arrived in time for bed. So we arose this morning to greet India for the first time.

We started with a three-hour class at the Iyengar Yoga Center. Anne studies yoga at an Iyengar center in Portland, so she was very excited about this opportunity. She wasn’t disappointed. Our teacher (in photo on right) was chosen by Mr. Iyengar to start a center in Delhi where others had failed. She’s intense and passionate. Trained to be a microbiologist, she is very direct and logical in her approach. She insisted that we do the yoga poses perfectly so as to avoid injury and to better prepare ourselves to go to more difficult poses that build from there.

We also experienced a lot of Delhi traffic as we went to see 12th to 16th century mosques and minarets. The afternoon light – and the pollution – added to their beauty.

Today was a toe in the water. Tomorrow we immerse ourselves in India, spending the day in the narrow streets and alleys of Old Delhi.
